Bartending is the art of attending customers, taking orders, mixing drinks and taking care of bar stock, sometimes all at once. There are many kinds of establishments where bartenders are required. There are small bars in shady towns with rough crowds to cater to, and then there are high-end restaurants with sophisticated drink menus and etiquettes to conform to the customer’s expectations. It is not an easy job, requiring a certain skill set that employers look for. The purpose of a bartender’s resume is to showcase that skill set, and to get the hirer to see that the applicant stands out from the crowd.

Like any other resume, a bartender’s resume should be in clear fonts and coherent structure. The employers are looking for a person who pays attention to detail; therefore a well-organised resume can go a long way into landing the applicant an interview. A bartender’s skill set consists of cool mindedness, excellent people skills, drink mixing and stock management skills, the ability to work under intense pressure, and the ability to handle unpleasant situations that may arise due to alcohol consumption, such as bar fights or disagreements. Employers look for candidates who have a strong personality and who are good at their job. Therefore, a bartender’s resume should also focus on highlighting the applicant’s vibrancy and creativity.

Employers know that bartending is learnt primarily by work experience; therefore education is not seen as a priority by most hirers. However, a degree of any kind should be mentioned on the resume, because it tells the reader that you are able to commit and deliver on tasks. The experience section of the resume demands some thought and organisation. A straightforward approach is to list down all the establishments where the applicant has worked, and the positions that he or she has held. These may not necessarily be bartending positions; if the applicant lacks early experience in the area, he or she may include job experience in a similar environment, such as waiting tables at a busy restaurant or being part of the team that helps to set up the bar. Any special accomplishments should also be listed. If the applicant has invented a drink that has ended up on the menu, revamped the bar layout to increase sales, improved the menu format, or has come up with some innovative techniques, it should be mentioned in brief detail. Awards, competitions (even candid ones), and qualifications should be duly stated.

What is different about bartender resumes is that you need not stick with a formal tone. This is a job that demands people with vibrant personalities, and the applicant should try to put that on paper. There is nothing wrong with using colourful language, or including an adventurous picture that shows vivacity, provided that it conforms to social norms. The beauty of a resume is that it holds the power of a first impression, and a first impression should capture what is best in the applicant. Only then does he or she stand a true chance of getting an interview and landing a job, and such is the importance of writing a good resume.
